Welcome to the Oropouche Hostel

We are located in the village of Vega de Oropouche, just
3 miles east of Sangre Grande (Sandy Grandy) on the Toco Road. Vega de Oropouche is nestled along the northern banks of the meandering Oropouche River, 6 miles from Matura Bay.

The Oropouche Hostel sits on a quiet 'trace' that dead ends at the Oropouche River. Here we are naturally cooled by the contant tradewinds coming off the rugged Atlantic Ocean.

Make the Oropouche Hostel your home in T&T. Explore Trinidad's laid back east coast:

Find gigantic leatherback turtles nesting along the 12 mile beach at Matura Bay.
Lime and swim in river or ocean with the locals at Salybia.
Buy fresh caught fish; swim, and watch surfers at Balandra Bay.
Drive south through the coconut estates along the Mayaro Road.
Surround yourself with lush rainforest at Rio Seco Waterfall in the Matura Forest Reserve.

TRINIDAD CARNIVAL is March 7 - 8, 2011. Bring your Carnival costume: Dance and whine to the newest T&T Calypso and Soca tracks.

Village of Vega de Oropouche:

You can buy a large variety of fresh, inexpensive fruits and vegetables at the produce/grocery stall in Vega junction (a 10 minute walk from the hostel). Also in thejunction- a nice bbq/ roti shop, a few 'convenience' shops, a dvd rental, as well as several neighborhood bars.

We can cook meals for you at additional cost.

Transportation:

Piarco Airport is a 45 minute drive from Oropouche Hostel. The Port Authority with Ferry Service to Tobago and other neighboring islands is a 75-90 minute drive from the hostel. Please allow us to arrange your taxi to Oropouche Hostel (for security reasons) by calling us with your arrival details.

Currency:

TTD is the currency here in Trinidad and Tobago. The exchange rates listed below will show you that your dollar will go a long way in T & T:

1 USD = 6.14 TTD
1 GBP = 8.74 TTD
1 Euro = 7.7 TTD

Compare those numbers with exchange rates for Barbados (BBD) and Eastern Caribbean (XCD).

1 USD = 2.00 BBD or 2.68 XCD
1 GPB = 2.85 BBD or 3.81 XCD
1 Euro = 2.54 BBD or 3.38 XCD

There are many banks/ATM machines in Sangre Grande. Using ATMs will give you a bank to bank exchange rate instead of the lower rate you get by exchanging your money at a local bank. And you won't have to wait in long bank lines!

Internet:

High speed internet is available in Sangre Grande, for practically nothing; 5-10 TTD per hour!
